Christians should understand these two things:
- Their Position
- Their Mission
Position
Our Position is explained beautifully in Ephesians 1:
Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who has blessed us with every spiritual blessing in the heavenly places in Christ, just as He chose us in Him before the foundation of the world, that we should be holy and without blame before Him in love, having predestined us to adoption as sons by Jesus Christ to Himself, according to the good pleasure of His will, to the praise of the glory of His grace, by which He made us accepted in the Beloved. Ephesians 1:3-6
Our Position as Christians is simply this: we are holy and without blame before God. That’s our Position, our Standing, before God.
How did we get to that amazing Position? We were:
- Blessed
- Chosen
- Predestined
- Adopted
- Accepted
We do not stand in this Position because of anything we have done. All we are and all we have is because of God’s rich Mercy and great Love for us.
But God, who is rich in mercy, because of His great love with which He loved us, even when we were dead in trespasses, made us alive together with Christ (by grace you have been saved), and raised us up together, and made us sit together in the heavenly places in Christ Jesus. Ephesians 2:4-6
Mission
Our Mission is explained beautifully in Matthew 22 and 28, and so many other portions of the New Testament:
Jesus said to him, ‘You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, and with all your mind.’ This is the first and great commandment. And the second is like it: ‘You shall love your neighbor as yourself.’ On these two commandments hang all the Law and the Prophets. Matthew 22:37-40
And Jesus came and spoke to them, saying, ‘All authority has been given to Me in heaven and on earth. Go therefore and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all things that I have commanded you; and lo, I am with you always, even to the end of the age.’ Amen. Matthew 28:18-20
Now all things are of God, who has reconciled us to Himself through Jesus Christ, and has given us the ministry of reconciliation, that is, that God was in Christ reconciling the world to Himself, not imputing their trespasses to them, and has committed to us the word of reconciliation. 2 Corinthians 5:18-19
Our Mission as Christians is simply this:
- Love God
- Love Others
- Make Disciples
- Obey Christ
- Teach Disciples To Obey Christ
- Preach the Word of Reconciliation
Christians are able to complete their Mission because of their Position.
… to the praise of the glory of His grace …
